Say What?!?!?!?

I have promised superman a more in depth resopnse on the atonement stuff, but in the meantime I found out something that has shocked me quite a bit.

Apparently NBS and CBS have rejected a 30 second "United Church of Christ" advertisement because it is too controversial. The part of it that is too controversial? Acceptance of homosexuality. Say what?!?!? I am just not sure how else to react.

The resurrection of Jesus did not involve the resuscitation of a corpse. Jesus did not rise from the dead, except perhaps in some metaphorical sense. The meaning of the resurrection is that a few of his followers—probably no more than two or three—finally came to understand what he was all about. When the significance of his words and deeds dawned on them, they knew of no other terms in which to express their amazement than to claim that they had seen him alive. also the weird thing about the ucc ad is how quiet it is, and how lowkey...i didnt see any queer folx @ all!

As for Funk's quote you posted, I think that is total and complete garbage. It is historical nonsense; unsupportable from any of the evidence without the addition of a lot of pre-decided baggage. But then, you are well aware of my opinions of Funk.

what happens if we back up, and start looking at atonement as symbolic, as not needing a phyiscal action and realising that the phyiscal action comes from history that can be quite savage.

A Gracious Reading of Rob Bell

The Journey So Far The controversy rages on over Rob Bell's upcoming new book. No matter what happens now, this controversy has effectively guaranteed that 'everyone who is anyone' will need to read this book. Either to find out what is wrong and bash it, or because someone we generally disagree with also disagrees with the book so it has to be good stuff! Then, because 'everyone' is reading it, people like me will 'have to' read it to. After all, I am a pastor, and if many of my people are reading and being influenced by a book, don't I need to know what is going on as well?  Or so the reasoning will go... and perhaps I will read it, who knows. In the meantime, none of this will stop me from continuing to join this fray which I probably ought to have stayed out of in the first place.
